pretty much the same, shepherd's pie usually with lamb, cottage pie with other meat, but most people use the terms interchangeably...

by memory shepards pie is minced up roast mutton or sheep typewith things like onion carrot sauces salt pepper egg stock cube butter flour water where as cottage pie is make a pot of mince and put in dish and put mash potato on top of both

Thanks indigojo. Actually I never thought about the connection regarding Lamb (sheep) and a Shepherd.
