How to make black icing

My grandson wants an All Blacks cake for his birthday! I have bought the black food colouring but do I just add it to white icing or is there a trick to it? Help please, the birthday is tomorrow!

If making butter cream icing I first add cocoa powder to the icing, making it dark. Then add the black. This way you get a true black with using too much black colour.

Thanks, I did wonder that but grandson doesn't like chocolate! ( I know, can't understand it! )
Can you taste the chocolate?

No, you can't taste the cocoa as you do not add much.

Depending upon the brand of colour - if it's something like Americolor gel, for example, you can add a few drops to your white icing and knead it through to get a good black. Some brands will not be so dark and will need assistance with the addition of cocoa.

The black food colouring liquid is not very black - the gels give better colour
