I intend to make this when my son is home at Christmas and I am hoping he can bring them home with him but whereabouts in Auckland can they be sourced from. I live in Southland and our two supermarkets do not stock this product. I am hoping someone knows. Thanks.

Golden raisins are usually what we know as sultanas, though they seem to be very dark these days.

"Golden raisins" are treated with sulfur dioxide after drying to give them their golden color. So you can use any raisin really!

Sun Maid brand has "Golden raisins" in NZ - you could e-mail them who is the NZ wholesaler

Try Invercargill Bidvest branch ph 03 214 9994, or Alexanders Marketing in Dunedin. Your supermarket (SV Plaza? ) maybe able to purchase these from Prolife / Sun Valley Foods or similar.

Where did you learn this from, uli? I understood golden sultanas were made from white grapes, which gives them their pale colour. Sulphur dioxide is used however it is a preservative, as opposed to a bleaching agent.

Bin Inn usually have them.

I need to read recipe properly. I went on Facebook to message Cuisine and queried with them about golden sultanas and after waffling for a bit, I checked the recipe and it clearly states golden raisins. Thanks everyone I will now google golden raisins and will look again at supermarkets.

Try Lindtroms in Christchurch, link below. They have a huge range of goods which are high quality and prices are very good. I can recommend their mail order service which is quick and very reliable.

From Wikipedia:

As I understand it the effect of the sulphur dioxide is to retard oxidisation, rather than bleaching.

Yes I am sure you are right there davidt4.
I guess the taste will be same if they are blond or dark though.

Pak n save here sells them here, in their bin section, more expensive than normal sultanas, but much nicer and plumper. From Alison's Pantry, I don't know if all P&S stock them tho.

We have that at New World and I will check that out, thanks.
