Icing - cupcakes etc

Can someone please tell me what the best icing type/recipe when starting off to decorate cupcakes/ birthday cakes etc!Normally just do plain old chocolate standard icing.

This recipe is a keeper.Billy Reese's Vanilla Buttercream from Billy's Bakery in New York.I give it five stars.

Ingredient Conversion for you:
Ingredients
• 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature (500 gms)
• 6 to 8 cups confectioners' sugar (750gms-1kg)
• 1/2 cup milk (I used Cream!)
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

This is what i use if i want a chocolate icing that i can pipe easily.
115g dark chocolate
50g butter
1 egg
175 g icing sugar
Melt butter and chocolate.Whisk in egg until well combined. Stir in icing sugar until well mixed and no lumps.
It will now be a nice spreadable consistency but if you put in the fridge for30 mins, sirring every 10 mins it will thicken and hold shape when piped. If the room is warm, chill further after piped.
