Is 800w any good for a microwave. we don't have one so might buy one this weekend.

I prefer 1000 plus, as you can always dial the power down when you want to. If I had my pick again I'd buy a panasonic inverter type. That means that when you ask for 50% power - you actually GET 50% power, not 100% power 50% of the time. They cost more, but if you want to bake with it, melt things delicately etc it gives better results.

If, however, you just want it for defrosting meat and re-heating meals for the most part, an 800watt warehouse jobbie does just fine.

Yeah I think 800w is good enough for reheating. I just purchased a panasonic 800w microwave from Harvey norman today for $88, it was a choice between a sharp 800w $85 or the panasonic. I chose the panasonic as the inside was a bit bigger.
